In my professional life I've had many roles but none have given me the personal satisfaction that starting and growing Joy by the Spoonful has. When I started this, I barely had enough money in the bank to buy the containers for the first weeks meals let alone the ingredients and labels. I bought one sleeve of 50 soup containers and was so scared that I'd wasted all that money if no one liked what I was hoping to do or if I wasn't a good enough cook to grab people's attention with the first round of soup. I made those first deliveries, there were just 8 of my friends who wanted to try it the first week! That was July of 2017 and I'm now ordering soup containers by the case....times have changed, that's for sure! We've tried different things, those of you who've been along this ride with me for a long time know that I've made adjustments (some good and some not so good, but it's a learning experience, right?) to try to be the best I can be. We quickly upped our game from doing just soup and salad to entree salads and then came Joy Club for those who wanted more meals for the week and on a total whim......I made a charcuterie tray for a friends party and the rest of that is history! I was honored to be asked by my friend at Complete Nutrition and Fitness to make meals for her clients and then Byron Winery had me be their "guest chef" for a pairing and that's grown into such a beautiful part of my business, where I get to be creative and have really built up my self confidence. You've all embraced me in such a wonderful way. You have celebrated my success, encouraged me when I was confused and you comforted me in ways I will never be able to thank you enough for when I lost my brother a year ago. I truly don't have "customers", I really do have family and friends who just happen to enjoy eating the meals I make as much as I enjoy making them for you.
I think I'm trying to put off saying this next part so I'll just say it. My family and I are moving to Mexico at the end of March. When we went down for Thanksgiving, we fell in love with the area, the people, the culture and the climate and we don't want to wait any longer to start a new life together. My husband and I, my son and my mom are all moving into a house together to enjoy our life. My husband will be retiring from his job at the end of February which will give us a month to sell pretty much all our belongings, pack our SUV and a small trailer with clothes and a few things we can't live without and we will caravan with my mom in her car to Ajijic, Mexico. It's just outside of Guadalajara on Lake Chapala. It's the most adventurous thing I've ever done and if you could ask my family, you'd know that doing adventurous things is my jam! But, the idea of having my whole family under one roof, buying our food from local farmers at the Wednesday Farmers Market, learning a whole new way of cooking, and an even bigger whole new way of life, that's made my heart beat the same way starting this company did when I was coming up with the idea.....and I LOVE that feeling!
So, what does that mean for Joy by the Spoonful? Holy Moly! There are AMAZING things to share with you! I was told I could sell but there is no greater gift to me than to be able to hand the reigns over to friends. So, that's what I'm doing! What may seem like a gift to them, is totally filling my heart with love and gratitude. Let me break it down....
My friend, Becky Corey , who so many of you know from Core Winery will be taking on the weekly meals and delivery part of Joy by the Spoonful. That means Joy Club, meals for groups, weekly selections and whatever else she creates! Not only has Becky been running Core Winery with her super cool husband, Dave, but she's also a part-time Chef Instructor in the Culinary Arts & Management program at Allan Hancock College. In her position, she has taught a wide variety of classes including Catering & Special Events, Beverage Management, Principles of Food, Whole Foods Meal Prep and Vegetarian Cooking. Can I tell you what really makes me happy about Becky taking over this part? She is a Boy Mom like me. :) Her high school-age son will be working with his mom just like my son worked with me. For some reason that warms my heart to no end! Becky has some great ideas in relation to Joy by the Spoonful and I can't wait to see what she does. Believe me, I couldn't have left you all in better hands and don't be surprised if there are wines and other new products coming your way. I just know that you'll support her as she adjusts her schedule and learns the ins and outs of Joy by the Spoonful. There will be a two week break in meals while we transition everything over to Becky and get her set up in the best way possible so she can come out of the gate running! So, stay tuned for that!
What about Charcuterie? As it turns out doing all the meals AND charcuterie is really a job for 2 people. I'd like to say I made it look easy but we all know that's not true. If I could have cloned myself, I would have had two people doing all of this so both sides of it got the attention they deserved. With that said, another amazing friend of mine, Melanie Strom, will be taking over charcuterie when I actually leave. Melanie has filled in for me when I was on vacation and I have to tell you, her first charcuterie looked the same as my 50th! She's got an amazing eye for small details and for making a beautiful presentation. Melanie works at VTC Enterprises during the week and is also raising beautiful children with her husband, Jason. So, if you've booked charcuterie up through the end of March, you'll still get me, but after that, it's all Melanie and I know you're going to be just as happy with what she makes as you've ever been with mine. You can find her at www.facebook.com/madebyMEL
There are details to work out and we are working furiously behind the scenes to get it all set up over the next couple of weeks but I want you to know a couple of very important things. One, if you contracted with ME for any events over the next couple of months, you're still getting me and I'm beyond thankful for those events. You're helping in ways you'll never know. Two, I will never ever ever ever be able to thank you all enough for the love and for the beautiful support you've shown me and my family over the last couple of years. Starting a business is scary. Starting it when there is less than $50 in the bank is ever scarier. But you helped me turn those fears into confidence and those tears of apprehension into tears of joy and for that I can only say this...thank you and from the bottom of my heart, you have my love. Heck, now I'm crying. Dang it.
I would be totally remiss if I didn't thank my son Jamison, my husband Craig or my mom Mary for their amazing support over the past few years. They've made this possible and I look forward to cooking for them and showing them my appreciation as we live the next phase of our life together.
If you have any questions or comments, please let me know. I'm here to help make this transition as seamless as possible.
I love each and every one of you,
Diane (aka "Joy")
